William Henry George Bradbury, aged 88, long-time resident of Fords and recent resident of Sea Crest Nursing Home, Little Egg Harbor, died in Southern Ocean Medical Center, Manahawkin on February 7, 2011. William, commonly known as George, was born in Preston, Lancashire, England in 1922. After leaving school he served his apprenticeship as a pipe fitter/plumber, a trade he used throughout his working life. In 1939 he enlisted in the British Army and served honorably throughout World War II as a sapper in the Parachute Regiment of the Royal Engineers. In September 1944, he parachuted into Arnhem, Holland as part of Operation Market Garden and was captured and became a prisoner of war. After the war he served in Palestine until discharge.
In 1947 he married Jeannette in Preston, and in 1948 their first child Pauline was born. Shortly afterwards they immigrated to the United States and settled in New Jersey. George worked on the railway and the as a pipe fitter until retirement. George enjoyed traveling and frequently visited England. He also paid frequent visits to locations in the US and Canada and periodically visited Arnhem as guest of the Dutch people as a thank you. He enjoyed reading and sports, especially soccer.
George was the husband of the recently deceased Jeannette. He is survived and greatly missed by his children Pauline Johnson and husband Frank, Douglas Bradbury and wife Diana, Philip Bradbury and wife Helen, Jean Marie Bradbury, and Geoffrey Bradbury, his grandchildren Craig, Brian, Courtney, Amanda, Evan and Jillian and great- grandchildren Jake, Elizabeth, Will, Maia, and James.
A private cremation ceremony was held on Thursday, February 10, 2011, under the direction of FLYNN AND SON FUNERAL HOME, 23 Ford Avenue, Fords, NJ.
