William J Byrnes, 104, of Metuchen, entered into eternal rest on March 21, 2013, at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. Born in Brooklyn, NY, William has resided in Metuchen since 1954.
William was the Credit Manager for the Boy Scouts of America Supply Services in North Brunswick for over 40 years before retiring.
William was an avid swimmer at the Metuchen YMCA where he reached a goal of swimming more than 5,000 miles in his life. He also volunteered his time at Jewish Community Center to aid swimmers with Multiple Sclerosis. In addition to his swimming, Bill enjoyed bowling at the Brunswick Edison Bowling Lanes in Edison and volunteering his time with Meals on Wheels. He also played tennis twice a week at the outdoor courts in Metuchen, with a seniors group called the Racqueteers. Bill was a ham radio operator for decades with the call letters WA2AEU. He was a communicant of St. Francis Cathedral in Metuchen.
Bill was predeceased by his wife, Adelaide Reilly Byrnes, in 1983; his daughter, Jeanne Quinto, in 2013; his sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and John Muldowney; and his nephew, John Muldowney, Jr. He is survived by his four grandchildren: Robert Quinto and his wife, Amy; Karen Jarvis and her husband, William; William J. Quinto; and Linda Wicker and her husband, Kenneth; ten great-grandchildren: Matthew, Casey and Kyle Quinto; Jacqueline, Austin, and Christian Jarvis; Sydney and Connor Quinto; and Mia and Sean Wicker. He is also survived by two nephews, Joseph Muldowney and his wife Elaine, and Edward Muldowney.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 9:30 am at the Flynn and Son Funeral Home, 23 Ford Avenue, Fords, NJ 08863 followed by a 10:15 am Funeral Liturgy at St. Francis Cathedral, Metuchen. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm.
In lieu of flowers, contributions are requested to the Metuchen/Edison YMCA or the Jewish Community Center in Edison.
