Obituary

Thomas J. Swales, III, 84, who lived most of his life in Edison, NJ before retiring to Jupiter, Florida, passed away on December 9, 2017 at the Jupiter Medical Center. He was born in New Brunswick on May 30, 1933. Tom worked with his father, Thomas Swales, Jr., at Best Block Cement Company in Edison and was a Master Mason as a member of the Palestine Lodge, No. 111. He later moved on to become the Owner/Operator of Edison Lanes, at one time, the largest bowling alley in the world. He was a member of the Bowling Proprietors' Association of America, Inc. He served in the US Army in 1953-54, during the Korean War. In 1963, he served as the Fire Chief of Raritan Engine Co. #1, located on Plainfield Ave., in Edison. Tom was a member of the Edison Masonic Lodge. He was the owner of the Tee-N-Jay farm in Monroe Twp. He was an altar boy and usher for the St. James Episcopal Church in Edison.

Tom is survived by his wife of 53 years, Elizabeth Liehr Swales, of Jupiter, FL; son, Thomas J. Swales IV, of Belmar; daughter, Jean Swales Volosin, of Poland, ME;  two stepsons, Peter Tomaro, of Yardley, PA, and Charles Tomaro, and his wife, Maria, of Edison; stepdaughter, Linda Tomaro, and her spouse, Rita Wolf of Hammonton, NJ;  eight grandchildren, Jessica, Danielle and Nicole Volosin; Alexandria and Grace Swales; Justin Tomaro, Rachel Tomaro and Amanda Tomaro Troiano, her husband Chris, and  great-granddaughter, Scarlet Troiano; and a  brother, Ted Miller and his wife Pat, of Jenkintown, PA.

Known for a big heart, Tom was always there to help anyone who needed it. Most people remember him for his days at Edison Lanes, where he always had a smile on his face as he walked up and down the concourse and talked to the bowlers. His family is going to especially miss him, his laugh and his easy-going attitude. Anyone who knew him, loved him.

Visitation will be at the Flynn and Son/Koyen Funeral Home, 319 Amboy Ave., Metuchen, NJ 08840, Wednesday 7-9 pm and Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Funeral services will be held Friday 11 am at the St. James Episcopal Church in Edison. Interment will follow in the Piscatawaytown Burial Ground.
