Obituary

Thomas J. Cammarata, 77, of Mountainside, passed away on October 6, 2022, at St. Barnabas Medical Center, Livingston.  Tom was born and raised in Kearny to his late parents John and Ann.  He was a graduate of St. Peter's Prep., Jersey City, Class of 1962.  Tom was a graduate of Seton Hall University and Seton Hall Law School.

Tom started his career as an Assistant Prosecutor in Hudson County and then, in 1972 became a founding partner at Shaljian, Cammarata and O'Connor which later became known as Cammarata, Nulty and Garrigan.  Tom is recognized by his peers as one of the preeminent criminal defense attorneys in the State of New Jersey.

He has tried a multitude of cases both in the Superior Court of New Jersey and the Federal District Courts of New Jersey and New York.  He had argued successfully before the Supreme Court of New Jersey and the Third Circuit Court in Philadelphia.

Tom has acted as counsel for numerous police organizations, including the Jersey City P.B.A., the Union City P.B.A., the Hudson County Superior Corrections Officers and the Hudson County Superior Police Officers.  Most recently he had represented Local 1478-2 of the International Longshoremen's Association and Local 1235 of the International Longshoremen's Association.

Tom has always been proud of his Italian heritage and the culture and history it represents.  He has enjoyed trips to Italy and since November of 2007 has been an active member of the Dante Alighieri Society of Jersey City, receiving the "Man of the Year" award in 2018.

Tom was a diehard Giants fan and enjoyed going to games as much as possible.  Whenever Tom wasn't working, he could be found on the golf course.  He was a longtime member of the Brooklake Country Club in Florham Park and the Ballenisles Country Club in Palm Beach Gardens, FL.  Tom always lived an active lifestyle, including skiing in Park City, Utah, and running the NYC Marathon in 1979, completing it in 4 hours and 22 minutes.

Tom is survived by his wife, Ronnie of 43 years; his daughter, Kelly Cammarata Javitt and son-in-law, Michael; a brother, John Cammarata and sister-in-law, Stephanie; and a sister, Virginia Tholund.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 13, 2022, from 2-4 pm and 6-9 pm at Flynn and Son Funeral Home, 23 Ford Ave., Fords.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:15am on Friday, October 14, 2022, at St. Francis Cathedral, 548 Main Street, Metuchen.  Cremation will follow and will be private.
