Selisett Nina
Corban
December 8, 1934 – January 16, 2021
Selisett Nina Corban, was born on December 8, 1934, in Giurgiu Romania, to Nicolae and Ariclia Mitrea. She passed from this life on Saturday, January 16, 2021, in Red Bank, NJ, at the age of 86.
Selisett lived an amazing life. Being an only child, she claimed that her parents always wanted a son and raised her with traditional male attributes, to be strong and assertive. That she certainly was. Excelling in academics, that led to her early completion of high school and then onto one of only a few women to attend the prestigious Polytechnica University of Bucharest. She there achieved an advance degree in electrical engineering and met her husband Claude, along with life-long friends. Social activities were abounding, that included festivals along the Danube River, music and dancing the nights away. Yet always with dreams of a better life in the west, amidst homeland political struggles.
With so much to contribute to the world, Selisett and Claude managed to flee post WWII communist Romania and found fond refuge in Paris, France. In 1968, they were awarded immigration to the United States. Settling first in New York, and then in Middletown, New Jersey. In 1976, Selisett became a proud U.S. citizen. She was a pioneer of her generation in the world of electrical engineering in the United States. She attained Licensed Professional Engineer Certifications in several states, including New Jersey; Maryland and Texas. Her work led her to many travels domestically and throughout the world, including 14 trips throughout China and Asia, as a U.S. Nuclear Power Plant Ambassador. She was also a lifelong member of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers).
Outside of her professional career, she was most dedicated and proud to be a mom. Her other passions included playing the piano, skiing, reading, attending concerts, the opera, museum lectures, and hosting parties. She also loved animals (especially dogs) and was a supporting member of the National Humane Society. Selisett is survived by her son Lawrence J. (Larry) Corban.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Flynn and Son Funeral Home, 424 East Avenue, Perth Amboy, NJ.
