Robert H. "Bob" Schmidt, 88, of Iselin, passed peacefully on Friday, March 1, 2019, at the Menlo Park Veterans Memorial Home in Edison, with his family at his side.
Born and raised in Fords, where he had resided most of his life, before moving to Iselin in 2005.
He retired in 1993, after over 35 years as a route salesman, for the Hostess Division of Continental Baking in Woodbridge.
He served his country proudly, with the US Air Force, during the Korean War.
He was a member of and senior vice commander and chaplain of the Hopelawn, VFW Post #1352, The American Legion T. Nulty Post #471 in Iselin, and the Catholic War Veterans.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Helen Schmidt, who died in 2004, and his children, Robert H. Schmidt, Jr, Deborah Ann, Stephen and James R. Schmidt, his sister, Marion Gural, and his brother, Vincent.
He leaves behind his 2 beloved daughters; Catherine Nicholls and her husband, Donald of Great Meadows, NJ, and Margaret "Peggy" Schmidt-Fuller and her husband Michael of South Otselic, NY, his daughter-in-law Deborah, of SC, 6 grandchildren; Amanda, James, Kimberly, Justin, Caitlin and Kayla, his 2 great grandchildren; Madilyn and Raymond James, his sister, Veronica Peterson and her husband, Norman of Fords and his brother John, of NC.
"Dad truly loved spending time with his family and friends, playing the lottery, playing cards, and drinking red merlot wine."
Visitation will be on Monday, March 4, 2019 from 4 pm to 8 pm, at the Flynn and Son Funeral Home, 23 Ford Ave. Fords, NJ 08863. Funeral services will begin on Tuesday, March 5, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. from the Flynn and Son Funeral Home, followed by a 11 am Funeral Service at Grace Lutheran Church, 600 New Brunswick Ave. Perth Amboy. Interment will follow in St. James Cemetery, Woodbridge.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to: the Menlo Park Veterans Memorial Home, c/o the Recreation Dept. 132 Evergreen Rd., Edison, NJ 08837.
