Robert T. Bjornsen Sr., 92, of Piscataway, passed away on October 17, 2013, in Morristown Medical Center. Born March 9,1921, in Fords, NJ, he has resided in Piscataway for the last 70 years; prior to that he lived in Metuchen.
He was a Machinist 1st Class for Ethicon, a division of Johnson & Johnson in Bridgewater. Robert was a decorated Military hero, serving in the US Army during WWII. He landed on Omaha Beach and fought in the Battle of the Bulge; he was one of two men to survive the Malmedy Massacre; he was a recipient of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He was also an avid fisherman and hunter. He enjoyed gardening and bowling.
Robert was predeceased by his wife, Arlene F. Bjornsen; his brother, Theodore G. Bjornsen; his sister, Mary Ann Bjornsen; and his grandson, Michael E. Dolegiewitz.
He is survived by three sons: Robert T. Bjornsen Jr. and his wife, Sandra, of Piscataway; Donald G. Bjornsen and his wife, Theresa, of Piscataway; and Kenneth J. Bjornsen and his wife, Carol, of Monroe Twp.; his daughter, Arlene Dolegiewitz and her husband, Edward, of Bridgewater; nine grandchildren: Jo-Ellen, Dawn Marie, Matthew, Mark, Kate, Kristin, Christopher, Taylor, and Donald; three great-granddaughters: Ashley, Jamie, and Andrea; and a great-great-granddaughter, Brooke.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 19, from 7:00-9:00 pm and Sunday, October 20, from 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 pm at the Flynn and Son/Koyen Funeral Home, 319 Amboy Avenue, Metuchen, NJ 08840. Services will begin Monday at 9:30 am at the funeral home, followed by a 10:00 am service at the First Presbyterian Church of Metuchen. Interment will follow in Resurrection Cemetery in Piscataway.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Military Order of the Purple Heart or the Wounded Warriors.
