Richard A. Alagona, 60, of Metuchen, NJ, passed away on Sunday, November 24, 2024 at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York City.
Richard was born on March 24, 1964 in Maplewood, NJ and he lived in Warren, NJ, Hillsborough, NJ and Trenton, NJ before moving to Metuchen, NJ, 26 years ago. He was the son of the late Jack and Esther Alagona.
Richard graduated from Watchung Hills Regional High School in 1982 where he was very active in the Script and Cue club and chorus.
Richard was a lifelong member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Somerville, NJ who enjoyed worshipping and serving others in many ways throughout his life, from childhood to adulthood. He served on the Church Council and he loved singing with the choir and being a Worship Assistant. He was a strong advocate for outreach activities, including the Food Bank, Backpacking for Others, the Angel Tree and various social ministry activities. He was a graduate of the NJ Diakonia program.
Richard's passion for music and singing led him to the New Jersey Gay Men's Chorus, where he was the heart and soul for many years. Richard will always be remembered for putting others before himself, and giving his whole heart to everything he did.
Richard leaves behind his beloved husband, David Katz; his sister, Elaine (Thomas) Frazer of Texas; his brothers, Donald (Gary) Alagona-Klocek of Minnesota and Jack Alagona; and his beloved Aunt Janice and Uncle Salvatore. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, cousins and a myriad of friends.
A memorial Service in Richard's memory is scheduled to take place on Saturday, January 4, 2025 at 11:00am at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 300 Union Avenue, Somerville, NJ 08876. Donations can be made in Richard's name to The Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Memorial Fund at the above address or to The New Jersey Gay Men's Chorus at PO Box 21, Princeton, NJ 08542.
Private services were entrusted to the care of the Flynn and Son / Koyen Funeral Home, 319 Amboy Ave., Metuchen, NJ 08840.
