Norman A. Felsenthal, 87, a Lower Merion, PA resident since 1973, passed away on October 4, 2022, at Hackensack Meridian Jersey Shore University Medical Center, in Neptune, NJ, near his second home in Bradley Beach, NJ.
Born on November 14, 1934, in West Lafayette, Indiana to Monroe and Mary Ann Felsenthal and raised in Columbus, OH, Norman served in the US Navy aboard the USS Brown (DD-546), Pacific Fleet as a Division Officer and later served as a Training Aids Officer in San Diego, California. He received his BS from Miami University of Ohio, an MA from San Diego State University, and a PhD from the University of Iowa.
Norman was a Professor Emeritus of Communications at Temple University in Philadelphia, where he taught for 32 years. Prior to that he taught at Purdue University. He educated tens of thousands of students during his tenure, including classes on Mass Media and Society, Public Broadcasting, and Communication Theory. He is the author of Mass Communication , a textbook that went into multiple editions. As a Trustee of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences he founded and chaired the organization's Scholarship Program. He was also a member of the Citizens Advisory Board Of WHYY-TV-FM and of the Philadelphia Chapter of Broadcast Pioneers.
Norman was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Helen, in 2016, and his brother Larry.
He is survived by his daughter, Kim Rosenblum and her husband, Joshua; his son, David Felsenthal and his wife, Felisa; five grandchildren, Sam Rosenblum, Spencer Rosenblum, Michael Felsenthal, Deena Wesfield, and Amira Lipczer; and one great-grandchild, Liam Wesfield.
A graveside service will be held at 11:30 AM, on Friday, October 7, 2022, at Beth Israel Cemetery, Woodbridge, NJ. Arrangements have been entrusted to Flynn and Son Funeral Home, 23 Ford Ave., Fords, NJ.
