Obituary

Nelson J. Macan, II, 57, son, brother, uncle, friend, free spirit, mental health and wellness advocate, and avid sailor, died on September 24, 2025.

Nelson, son of Nelson R. Macan, and Joanne P. Hare-Macan, was born in Orange, NJ, and grew up in Middletown. Following, he moved to Rumson, graduated from Rumson Fair-Haven High School in 1988, then traveled and spent time in California and Alaska before relocating back to New Jersey and finally making his home in the Highlands.

Nelson touched many lives. He was a teacher, mentor and inspiration, instructing many on how to safely sail, and continuing in the legacy of his father's passion from the waters of the Raritan Yacht Club.

Nelson was someone who learned by experience and  taught "Cinch by the inch" and "Little by slowly" – developing and cultivating independence though education, connection and relationships. He planted the seeds of motivation through his own struggles and experience, modeling how one can grow and measure their success one day at a time.

He was a Mental Health Advocate and a spokesperson for "NAMI" – the National Association of Mental Illness, and proudly served as a board member for HABcore's Advisory Council since 2023, as well as other organizations.

Through his work and through supporting mental health organizations, Nelson uplifted others, helping individuals navigate their own sobriety and housing stability. His legacy is ensuring others hold their course each day with strength and integrity and stay on a forward path.

He is predeceased by his parents Nelson R. Macan, Joanne P. Hare-Macan, his love, Mimi, his sister, Jackie, and brothers Robert and Louis "Jeremy" Macan.

He is survived by sisters Margaret Mary "Meg" Macan and Toni Macan-Rodriquez, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles. He will be missed for his insights, empathy, candor, and service to the community.

In his memory, donations can be made to help ensure continued goodwill and support to organizations of those in need In lieu of flowers. Good speed

A private celebration of life service will be held in the future in 2026 honoring his many gifts and contributions. I encourage those who have known Nelson to create their own service and mourn his death. I know Nelson would want us to carry on. Please let his friends and family be aware.
