Nancy Ann Scala Makar, 81, beloved wife of Stephen P. Makar, died of heart failure on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, at the Ocean Medical Center in Brick Township New Jersey.
She was born on May 19, 1942, in Staten Island, New York, to Agnes and Arthur Scala of Perth Amboy, New Jersey.
She was predeceased by her two brothers, Lawrence and Richard Scala and her nephew, Thomas G. Scala, who died of cancer in 2017 at the age of 43.
Nancy was raised in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, where she attended the Saint Mary's Church and graduated from Saint Mary's High School.
She went on to graduate from Middlesex County College School of Nursing, attaining her degree as a Registered Nurse.
She served over twenty two years in nursing, the majority of which she worked as an Emergency Room nurse. Her greatest love was serving the community as an E.R. nurse at Perth Amboy General Hospital, South Amboy Memorial Hospital, and the Somerset Medical Center in Somerville, New Jersey.
She married Stephen P. Makar of Edison, New Jersey on October 28, 1978. They lived in Perth Amboy, NJ until the fall of 1982, at which time they moved to Bridgewater Township, New Jersey. They then moved to Toms River, New Jersey in 2016, where she resided until her death.
Nancy was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1994 which caused her to leave the nursing profession. She was also a survivor of breast cancer (2010). Nancy maintained close relations with her many friends from Perth Amboy and Middlesex County, New Jersey. She always felt that her friends were "as close as family". Nancy was an avid dog lover who owned six dogs, who she adored. Nancy is survived by her husband of forty-five years, Stephen, who was the "Love of her Life". She is also survived by a nephew, Richard Scala of Cottonwood, Arizona, and her nieces Michelle Jeffery of Hendersonville, Tennessee and Diane Scala of Colorado, and her sister-in-law Theodora Makar of Spring Lake, NJ. She also has numerous cousins living in Staten Island, NY, New Jersey and Florida.
Visitation will be on Sunday, October 22, 2023 from 2 pm to 6 pm with a Parastas Service at 4 pm at the Flynn and Son Funeral Home, 23 Ford Ave. Fords, NJ 08863.
A Funeral Service of Divine Liturgy will will take place on Monday, October 23, 2023, at 11 am at the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 684 Alta Vista Place, Perth Amboy NJ 08861. Cremation will follow privately.
In lieu of Flowers contributions may be made in her memory to the Alzheimer's Association at www.act.alz.org.
