Obituary

Mooie Wong Eng, 99, of Edison, passed away on January 6, 2016, at home. She was born in Taishan, Guangdong, China on October 31, 1916. She had resided in Edison for the last 15 years, after moving from Clifton. Mooie graduated from Ohio State University Class of 1941.  She was the first Chinese RN to work for the Community Service Society in New York City.  She was instrumental in assisting the many "war-brides" of WWII with unfamiliar customs and language. She helped improve the community's access to health care, maternal health care, housing, financial assistance, legal aid, and senior services.

Mooie was a founding member of the Chinatown Planning Council (CPC), now the Chinese American Planning Council. In 1997 she received a Distinguished Community Service Award from the New York Cosmopolitan Lions Club.

Mooie was an accomplished seamstress and chef.

She was predeceased by her son, Wesley Eng; her husband, Gan Eng; and two brothers, Herbert Wong and Robert Wong.

Mooie is survived by her son, Leonard Eng and his wife, Leslie, of Edison; a daughter, Brenda Choy and her husband, Frank, of Tampa, FL; four grandchildren: Alison Kilmer, Clayton Choy, David Eng, and Amy Eng; a great-grandson, Cody Nelson; a brother, Andrew Wong and his wife, Olive, of Beverly Hills, MI; a sister Dora Wong, of Boynton Beach, FL, and two sisters-in-law, Marianne Wong of North Brunswick and Jeanne Wong of Harrison, NY.

Visitation will be on Sunday, January 10, 2016, 11am-1pm. Services will be at 12 Noon at the Flynn and Son Koyen Funeral Home, 319 Amboy Ave., Metuchen, NJ 08840.
