Obituary of Matthew S. Winkler


Matthew (Matt) S. Winkler, 75, of Fords, passed away Friday, May 12, 2023 at the J.F.K. Medical Center in Edison. Mr. Winkler was born in Fords to the late John and Elizabeth Winkler and had lived all of his life in Fords. Mr. Winkler was a US Army Veteran of Vietnam war serving in West Germany. Upon discharge, Matt joined Protection Fire Co. #1 of Keasbey and served in most executive offices and line positions including Chief twice in 1976 and 1992. He was a fifty-four year member and a life member of the NJ Firemen's Association. Matt was also active in both the Keasbey, Fords and Hopelawn Fireman's Relief and Exempt Associations. He was a Past President of the Fords Lions Club and also volunteered coaching in both the Hopelawn and Fords Youth Associations. Matt was an avid bowler for many years and enjoyed the activity with family and friends. He was employed by FujiPoly America Corp. in Carteret before retiring in 2009. Matt was a graduate of John F. Kennedy High School and Middlesex County College. Matt loved animals especially Rocky, Zoe and Kit Kat.

He is survived by his loving wife of fifty years, Roseann Winkler, his two daughters, Lisa Winkler of Orlando, FL and Beth and her husband Christopher Matulewicz of South River, NJ,, his brother, John and his wife Roseann Winkler of South Amboy, NJ, two nieces , one nephew, and several cousins. Services will be held Wednesday 6:30 pm at the Mitruska Funeral Home, Inc., 531 New Brunswick Ave., Fords. Private cremation will follow in the Rosehill Crematory in Linden. Visitation hours will be held Wednesday from 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm. In lieu of flowers please make memorial donations to your local Fire Company or animal Shelter. The family will be having a repass after the services.
