Area native noted for decades of volunteerism
Mary T Smith, 95, died at St. Mary Catholic Home in Cherry Hill, NJ on December 31.
Mary spent most of her life in Middlesex County -Woodbridge, Perth Amboy and Sayreville before moving to Bethlehem, PA in 2015 and to St Mary in 2019.
Mary was a Confidential Secretary at Chesebrough Ponds in Perth Amboy and at Merck and Co. in Rahway before beginning a life of volunteerism and raising her family. She helped establish the St, James Grammar School library in Woodbridge in 1966 where she volunteered for 20 years. That same year, she was named Catholic Daughter of the Year by the Catholic Daughters of America.
She held several executive positions for the Raritan Bay Medical Center Perth Amboy auxiliary, where she volunteered for over 35 years. She also volunteered for 11 years at the Raritan Bay Medical Center Foundation before being hired as a part-time Secretary.
Known for her old-school English writing style and grammatical perfection, she was able to conquer crossword puzzles virtually her entire life.
Mary was predeceased by her husband Francis, her parents, Harold and Teresa O'Donnell, sisters Catherine and Elizabeth, and brother Joseph.
She is survived by her children: Eileen Behr and her husband Jack of Clark, NJ, Jeffrey and his wife Nancy of Bethlehem PA, Claire Wheatley of Mount Prospect, IL, and Paul and his wife Rosemarie of Marlton NJ; 11 grandchildren: Katie, Tara, William, Kevin, Maryellen, Paul Jr., Michelle, Amy, Maureen, Patrick, and Timothy; and nine great-grandchildren: Aedan, Cavan, Arden, Greta, Maeve, Anna, Wynne, Ellie, and Ryan.
Viewing will be held the day of the funeral, Monday, January 4, 2021 from 9am -10am at Flynn and Son Funeral Home, 23 Ford Ave, Fords, NJ. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30am at Our Lady of Peace Church in Fords.
A Memorial service will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Activities Department at St. Mary's Catholic Home in Cherry Hill, NJ.
