Marie Murphy Scannell, 100 years old, of Metuchen, passed peacefully on Sunday, October 19, 2014, with her loving family at her side, at the Roosevelt Care Center in Edison,

She was born in Perth Amboy and had resided most of her life in Metuchen.

Marie retired in 1980, after over 40 years as Supervisor of Schools, grades K through 8 with the Perth Amboy Board of Education. She had also taught elementary school with the Somerville Board of Education.

She had graduated from Perth Amboy High School and received her BA degree at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, and her Masters Degree in Elementary Education at Teachers College Columbia University, NYC.

She was a devout catholic and communicant of St. Francis Cathedral in Metuchen, where she served as a Eucharistic Minister and as a member of the Altar Rosary Society and the Legion of Mary. She was also a member of the NJ Teachers Assoc. and the National Education Assoc.

Mrs. Scannell was predeceased by her beloved husband, John Patrick Scannell, who died in 1972, and her son in law, Lt. Col. Joseph Desch, USAF in 2000 and her three siblings.

Marie leaves behind her beloved twin daughters, Dr. Elizabeth Scannell-Desch of Highland, NY and Dr. Mary Ellen Doherty and her husband Len, of Ridgefield, CT and her two dear grandchildren, Christopher and Meaghan.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, October 23, 2014 at 9:45 a.m. from the Flynn and Son /Koyen Funeral Home, 319 Amboy Ave. Metuchen, N.J. 08840, followed by a 10:15 a.m. Funeral Liturgy at St..Francis Cathedral, Metuchen. Interment will follow in St. Gertrude Cemetery, Colonia.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, October 22, 2014, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
