Maria Zito-Kaufman, of Colonia, NJ, and New Smyrna Beach, FL, passed away Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach at the age of 78. Born in Brooklyn, NY, she graduated from Villa Victoria Academy in 1965 where later she served on their Board of Directors. She earned her Bachelor's degree in English and Music from Marymount College in Tarrytown, NY, in 1969. Earlier in life, she was a teacher at Most Holy Rosary School and St. Cecelia School, as well as an English teacher at Perth Amboy High School where she also directed many musical productions. After deciding to concentrate solely on her career as a Soprano, she performed throughout the East Coast. She enjoyed 20 years with The Festival of the Atlantic, appearing alongside numerous Broadway vocalists. She also performed at Carnegie Hall and the Senate Rotunda, as well as with The Key West Pops. Maria was also known for her compassion and profound generosity, as well as her time volunteering with numerous organizations and charities.
Maria embraced life with an unparalleled zest, finding joy in every moment and sharing her vibrant spirit with all who knew her. Her true passion shone brightest when she was on stage, captivating audiences with her talent and infectious energy. Above all, she cherished the time spent with her beloved family, whose laughter and love were the greatest treasures of her life.
Maria was predeceased by her husband of four years, Dr. Peter Bonafide, who passed away in 1975; and her parents Dr. Paul and Rosalie Zito. Surviving are her loving husband of 45 years, Simon Kaufman; son, Peter Bonafide and daughter-in-law, Tara DiBari-Bonafide; granddaughters Gianna and Mia DiBari; and brother, Vincent Zito.
She will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by everyone whose life she brightened. She touched countless hearts and leaves behind a profound legacy of kindness and devotion.
Visitation will be held on Friday, February 6, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Flynn and Son / Mitruska Funeral Home, 23 Ford Avenue, Fords, NJ 08863. A 9:00 AM Funeral Liturgy will be held on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at Holy Rosary Church of the Good Shepherd Parish, Hopelawn, NJ. Entombment will immediately follow in the family Holy Rosary Mausoleum.
