Obituary

Julia F. Van, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 12, 2025, at the age of 106.

Born in Shanghai, China, on October 10,1918, she married Kya K. Van in 1933.  They raised four children, Ruby, Allen, Vivien, and Tony.  After moving to Hong Kong, she and Kya built a successful textile business. They immigrated to the U.S. in 1976, and continued to work well into their 70s.

Julia demonstrated her love for God by serving those around her, comforting those who were suffering, and interceding in prayer on others' behalf. Her commitment to her faith was consistent and unwavering. As an active member of the Rutgers Community Christian Church, she boldly shared her faith and wisdom, inspiring and impacting countless lives.

She is survived by two daughters, Ruby Chow, of Edison, and Vivien Chow of San Mateo, CA; a son, Tony Van, and his wife, Madalena, of West Caldwell; a daughter-in-law, Gwyneth Van, of Thousand Oaks, CA; as well as six grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren spread across New Jersey and California.

Julia was predeceased by her husband, Kya K. Van, in 1993; her son, Allen Van, in 1994; her son-in-law, Henry Chow, in 1991; her son-in-law, Donald Chow, in 1995; her great-grandson, Ryan Chow, in 2007, and twelve siblings.

Visitation will take place on Friday, January 24, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Flynn and Son/Mitruska Funeral Home located at 23 Ford Ave., Fords, NJ 08863. Funeral services on Saturday, January 25, 2025, will begin at the funeral home with an hour of visitation from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM. Entombment will follow at Woodbridge Memorial Gardens at 10:30 AM. Friends and relatives are invited to join the family for a memorial service following the entombment from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the Rutgers Community Christian Church, located at 71 Cedar Grove Lane, Somerset, NJ 08873.

Julia was an immensely practical and self-less woman, exemplifying the servant heart of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.   If you desire to give a gift in her memory, the Van/Chow family requests that, in lieu of flowers, you may carry on her mission of sharing the Gospel and caring for others by supporting her church's mission fund.  Please donate through this giving link and include in the memo:  "RCCC Mission Fund in Memory of Julia Van"
