Judith Ann
Shafranski Hoffman
Sep 8, 1941 — Dec 29, 2016
Judith Ann Shafranski Hoffman, 75, passed away at Robert Wood Johnson/ Barnabas University Hospital on Thursday, December 29, 2016. Born in Perth Amboy on September 8, 1941, Judith was a life-long resident of New Jersey having lived in Perth Amboy, Edison, Piscataway, and finally in Somerset. She was a graduate of Perth Amboy High School, Class of 1959 and St. Peter's New Brunswick School of Nursing, Class of 1962. Judith spent time raising her family before returning to Middlesex Community College and Douglas College at Rutgers University where she received her BA in English in 1987.
She was active in the American Cancer Society and Multiple Sclerosis Foundation. In 2014 she was honored, along with her husband, at the Wine and Roses event for the ACS. She was a member of the Metuchen Country Club and enjoyed golf with the "9-holers" both there and at Rutgers University. She was active in the French Club at the Rutgers RU-ALL program, and was an avid piano player. She also was a devoted parishioner of St. Peter the Apostle in New Brunswick, NJ.
Judith was a kind, compassionate, loving, sensitive and passionate person. A Registered Nurse by profession, she retired many years ago but continued to administer compassionate and loving care to family and friends throughout her life, including a visit to Thailand as part of Operation Smile to care for children. She was proud of her children – Beth, a school teacher in Framingham, MA, and John Jay, the former Attorney General and current Chief Counsel of Rutgers University.
She was predeceased by her parents, John and Judy Shafranski, and her brother, James Shafranski.
Judith is survived by her beloved husband of 53 years, John A. Hoffman, Chairman of the Board of the law firm, Wilentz, Goldman & Spitzer, to whom she was so incredibly devoted. She also is survived by her beloved children, Beth Driscoll and her husband, David, and John Jay Hoffman and his wife, Mary Jude Cox Hoffman; her cherished grandchildren: Casey Driscoll, Aidan Driscoll, John Stuart Hoffman, and Margaret Jude ("Maggie") Hoffman; her brother, John Shafranski and his wife, Jean; and her sisters: Jane Timinski and her husband, Robert; Joyce Heneghan and her husband, Pat; and her sister-in-law, Barbara Shafranski, as well as many nieces and nephews.
She had a magical quality and was beloved by – and impacted – everyone that she touched. She adored her children and was happiest when simply reading her grandchildren a bedtime story. She had a creative sense of style and was distinguished by her many unique hats. Judy will be greatly missed by her family and friends every day.
