Joyce Marion
Westerman
May 16, 1940 – June 16, 2024
Joyce Marion Westerman, 84 of Ocean Grove, NJ passed peacefully at her home early Sunday morning after a valiant battle with cancer.
Joyce was born on May 16, 1940, in Brooklyn, NY but was a proud resident of Philadelphia during her childhood. She graduated from Olney High School and worked as a lab technician at Albert Einstein Southern Division until she was married. She spent most of her life in Rumson and then Monmouth Beach, although was also a resident of Florida in her later years. She was predeceased by her parents Arthur and Lillian Gilson.
She leaves behind her devoted children: Lisa Spiegel and her husband Daniel, Pamela Petrosino and her husband Robert, and her son Michael "Chaim Efraim" Westerman. She is also survived by her loving grandchildren, Matthew Spiegel, Bobbi Spiegel and her fiancé Ben Klepper, April Petrosino, and Chloe Petrosino and her fiancé Katie Mason, as well as her adoring siblings, Casey Gilson and his wife Pam, and her sister Barbara Hoberman and her husband Allan. Joyce was also a devoted and loving aunt to Amanda and Russell Manes and their children, Zachary and Melanie Gilson and their children, Joelle and Aaron Averbuch and their children, Dr. Jordan Teper, Kenneth Reinstein and Alisa Shorago, and Jonathan and Stacy Reinstein and their children.
Joyce was pure sunshine – beautiful, caring and fun-loving. There was nothing she loved more than celebrating milestones with her family, attending an opera or a Broadway show, or cruising around Europe and the Caribbean. She enjoyed practicing Judaism and attending synagogue, and was a life-long ardent supporter of Israel. She cherished spending time with her children and grandchildren most of all, always proudly introducing them around the dining room or pool of her complex and delighting in their milestones and successes.
Joyce's beauty was both inside and out. She was a caring person who went to work upon high school graduation to help support her family and never stopped. Her generous support allowed those she loved to obtain higher education degrees and to have successful careers. She was her siblings' "fairy princess."
Her generous spirit didn't stop with her immediate family. She was someone who would host a fundraising party for an Israeli Prime Minister at one moment and donate chairs to a local church in need in the next. She would take money out of her pocket to give to someone who was struggling.
She was young at heart, always looking forward to the next adventure, and that is how she will be lovingly remembered.
Funeral services will take place on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, at 12 noon, at the Flynn and Son /Koyen Funeral Home, 319 Amboy Ave. Metuchen, NJ 08840 with Rabbis Maury Kellman and Baruch Yaffi officiating. Interment will follow at Beth Israel Memorial Park Cemetery in Woodbridge. Shiva will be observed at the family residence.
If desired contributions may be made in her memory to Congregation Agudath Achim, Bradley Beach or Congregation B'Nai Israel, Lakewood, c/o Rabbi BaruchYaffi.
