Obituary

Joseph B. Szebenyi Jr., 83, of Edison died Monday May 23, 2022, at Roosevelt Care Center in Edison.

Joseph was born in a home on Brooke Avenue and raised at home on Ashley Street in Perth Amboy to the late Margaret Szebenyi and Joseph B Szebenyi Sr. After graduating Perth Amboy High School Joseph worked at DuPont Parlin, NJ. Then he became a Volunteer Fire Fighter for Raritan Engine Company # 1 in Edison, he then knew his calling in life was firefighting. He pursued his passion and attended fire schools and in 1972 became a Career member of the Edison Division of Fire. He was assigned at Station #1 on C platoon. He then was promoted to Fire Inspector for the Edison Division of Fire until his retirement in 1994. He was also a member of the Edison Fire Fighters Union Local #1197.

He was a member of the International Association of Arson Investigators and was a founding member of the Middlesex County Fire Prevention and Protection organization. When he wasn't on calls or spending time with his family, he enjoyed being the assistant coach for the Edison boy's baseball and he was also a past President of the Edison Jets Pop Warner football team. From 1970-1985 he was the owner and operator of Szebenyi Lawn Care, until his sons took over in 1985 and continued to run the business.

A proud third-degree knight for the Knights of Columbus Lodge #3272 in Edison and a member of the Edison Elks Lodge #2487. Joseph was member of the Edison Democrat organization. He was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and the New York Giants, he like to go bowling, spending time gardening with his wife, and took joy in watching the horse races on TV.

Joseph is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Marjorie Szebenyi; his caring sons, Joseph Szebenyi III and wife, Patti, Brian  Szebenyi and fiancé, Heidi; His most loved granddaughter Halee, his brother, Zoltan Szebenyi;  former daughter in law, Jennifer Carlson; sister in law's Carol Day, and the late Maryann Payti;  his nieces and nephews, Lois Payti, Linda Luminiello, Carol, Albert, Elizabeth, the late Calvin Day, Cassandra Horne (late husband, Danny) and fiancé Pedro, and Jessica Nebus and husband Tom; his great niece and nephew, Mason Horne and Kenzie Nebus; along with many cousins and all the friends that have served by his side day in and day out. He will truly be missed.

A visitation will be held on Thursday May 26, 2022, from 4-8 p.m., in the Flynn and Son Funeral Home, 23 Ford Avenue Fords, NJ 08863. Services will begin at 7 p.m. in the funeral home. A funeral mass will be held on Friday May 27, 2022, at 10 a.m. at Guardian Angels R.C. Church, 37 Plainfield Road, Edison, NJ 08817. Family and friends are welcome to gather in the funeral home starting at 9 a.m. A graveside service to follow at Hillside Cemetery in Metuchen.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to honor Joseph's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society. Please keep the family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
