Dr. Joseph E. Scerbo, 89, of Jackson, passed peacefully at his home on Friday, September 18, 2015, with his loving family at his side.
Born in Jersey City, was formerly of Colonia and Bridgewater, before moving to Jackson 3 months ago.
He was a veteran of WW II, serving with the US Navy Amphibious Force, in the Pacific Theatre.
He received his BS Degree from Fordham University, Bronx, NY in 1949 and his MD from Bologna University, School of Medicine, in Italy in 1959.
Dr. Scerbo was a practicing physician in Hoboken, specializing in Internal Medicine and Pulmonology, for 43 years, before retiring in 2012.
He served his internship at Long Island College Hospital, NY. Served as Resident in Pathology at Long Island Hospital, NY and the V.A. Hospital, East Orange, NJ. Served as Resident in Internal Medicine at St. Michael's Hospital, Newark, NJ and as Resident in Pulmonology Diseases at the V.A. Hospital, East Orange.
Dr. Scerbo was a Staff Physician at the V.A. Hospital in Bronx, NY and served as President of the Medical Staff for many years and was the Director of Medical Education, Respiratory Service and Critical Care at St. Mary's Hospital in Hoboken,
He was a member of the American College of Chest Physicians and the American Thoracic Society and served as former chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee to the Central Lung Association of NJ. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Blessed Sacrament Council, in Martinsville.
Dr. Scerbo received awards for Teaching Family Practice Residents at St. Mary's Hospital in 1986 and 1997 and was recipient of the Top Doctors Award, Castle Connolly Medical LTD in 2001, and had published many articles appearing in various medical journals over the years.
Dr. Scerbo leaves behind, his beloved wife, Dorothy, his four beloved children, Richard Ludowig and his wife, Brenda of Katy, TX, Lynne Schwartz and her husband Charles, of Woodbridge, Nancy Murrin and her husband Dennis, of Brick and Kenneth Ludowig and his wife Kathleen, of Ashburn, VA, his ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren, a brother, Xavier Scerbo of Jersey City and a sister, Jane Fershing and her husband Al, of Watchung, his two nieces and his sister-in-law Jane Smith, of East Brunswick
Visitation will be on Tuesday, September 22, 2015, 2-4 pm & 7-9 pm, at the Flynn and son Funeral Home, 23 Ford Ave. Fords, NJ 08863. Funeral services will begin on Wednesday, September 23, 2015 at 10 am from the Flynn and Son Funeral Home, followed by a 10:30 am Funeral Liturgy at St. James Church, Woodbridge. Cremation will follow, privately.
