Obituary

The family of Joseph J. Roth of Jackson, NJ is saddened to announce his passing on Thursday, December 19th, 2024, at the age of 91 years.

Joe was born the youngest of five children to Bertalan and Helen (nee Matausz) Roth on February 21st, 1933, in Perth Amboy, NJ.  He was born into a family of two native-born Hungarians who took great pride in their ethnic heritage and placed immeasurable importance on family.  Joe's life, growing up in this close-knit family, was filled with family activities that ranged from daily dinners to holiday celebrations to summer backyard barbecues to Sunday mass, always surrounded by his parents and siblings.

Joe was a Communicant and Confirmand of Our Lady of Hungary R.C. Church in Perth Amboy, NJ.  He was also a member of the Hungarian Catholic Club, sang in the Church choir, and was very active in the parish functions.

Shortly after graduating Perth Amboy High School, Joe decided he was going to enlist in the United States Air Force.  In 1952 at the age of 19, he began his basic training at Sampson AFB in New York.  Following basic training, Joe was assigned to Shepperd AFB in Texas and received specialty training as a draftsman.  He was ultimately assigned to South Ruislip Air Station in London, England, an experience that he would recall fondly for many years to come.  After his separation from the Air Force as an Airman First Class, Joe returned home to Perth Amboy to settle down.

Upon returning home, Joe began his career as a metallurgist for American Smelting and Refining Company, was married Dolores Hoffman in 1957 and began to raise a family that included a son Joe and a daughter Nancy.  Following the example set by his parents, Joe placed a high priority on raising a tight-knit family, being active members in their church parish, spending time with extended family, and practicing the Hungarian traditions of his heritage with pride to ensure they would be passed down for generations.

Joe would retire as a Metallurgical Chemist after 30 years.  Never content to sit still, Joe decided to take advantage of his ability to repair almost anything, no shortage of people who would seek his skills, and a passion for helping those in need; and started up a business called J.R.'s Mr. Fix-It.  Joe would eventually hang up his tool belt, complete his final retirement, and move close to the "Jersey Shore".

In retirement, Joe had many friends he stayed close with and who shared his many interests.  He loved to spend time in the summer fishing on his boat.  Joe kept a long list of attractions that he and his close friend Genevieve would travel to and enjoy learning about.  The time he spent relaxing at home always included activities that kept his mind active with crossword and jigsaw puzzles, coin collecting, researching his family tree, and reading up on Hungary's history.

But most of all, Joe enjoyed spending time with his daughter Nancy and her family, his beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren, all who adoringly knew their grandfather as "Pop-Pop".

Joe was predeceased by his parents Bertalan and Helen Roth, his sister Helen Owens, his brother Albert "Kirby" Roth, his brother John Roth, his wife Dolores Roth, and his granddaughter Sarah Ferrara.

Joe is survived by his sister Grace Cornell of Huntington Valley, PA; his daughter Nancy Ferrara and her husband Anthony Ferrara of Jackson, NJ; his son Joseph Roth; his four grandchildren Amanda, Michael, Kathryn, and Christina; his three great grandchildren Zachary, Jack, and Remi; his daughter-in-law Karen Pizzirusso of Jackson, NJ; and his many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, January 11, 2025 from 10:00am -11:30am at the Flynn and Son/Mitruska Funeral Home, 23 Ford Ave., Fords. Committal of Mr. Roth's cremated remains will follow at 12:00pm in Our Lady of Hungary Cemetery, Perth Amboy.
