Obituary

John J. O'Mullan, "Johnny O", 84 of Fords passed away peacefully in his home, December 12, 2022, surrounded by the love of his family. Born in Newark, John grew up in Orange with three brothers and four sisters. In his hometown he met his grammar school sweetheart, Marie Manna and they happily married and moved to Fords where they resided for nearly 59 years.

A first-generation Irish American, he was proud of his Emerald Irish heritage and their rich traditions. Amongst those who began the O'Mullan Thanksgiving tradition, where family members gathered at the American Legion to break bread and celebrate Thanksgiving dinner for 54 years. The celebration spread to four generations, as many as 120 family members attending each year.

He was an Army veteran, serving two years in Korea. Upon his return to the states, he began a career as a Sheetmetal Worker in Union Local 25 where he was a member for over 60 years. He valued his job and his crew and was recognized for his continuous years of service and dedication.

In 1999, John retired for a gentler lifestyle, spending his time traveling with Marie. Eventually dementia began to consume John's life, but he was blessed to have his beloved wife who cared for him daily. Attached at the hip for nearly 60 years, they were often found hand in hand.

John was selfless, always willing to drop what he was doing to perform an act of service for another. John was honest to himself and his character. He was well known for his sense of humor and his silly sayings. His family members, especially grandchildren, will remember him most by his clever and witty words. A regular at making people smile, he could brighten up anyone's day.

Beloved son of the late, John P. O'Mullan and Margaret Costello O'Mullan. Brother of the late, Margaret Klacik, Patricia Morrison and Elizabeth Martin, and devoted loving husband to Marie Manna O'Mullan.

He leaves behind his beloved wife of 60 years, Marie O'Mullan, He lives on within his two children: Donna O'Mullan Raia (and husband, Salvatore) of Basking Ridge, and John P. O'Mullan (and wife, Jennifer Conyack O'Mullan) of Colonia. Known as "Poppy" to three grandchildren: Alexandra (Allie) Raia, Cassondra (Cassie) Raia and Thomas (Tommy) O'Mullan. He is survived by four wonderful siblings: Eleanor DeJulio (Enrico), Robert O'Mullan (Penny), Daniel O'Mullan (Helen), and Eugene O'Mullan (Linda).
