John Otto Mayer, 86, of Wanamassa died Friday, May 21, 2010 at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch. Born in West New York, he formerly resided in Fords for 50 years, and Jamesburg before moving to Wanamassa.
He was an Electronic Engineer with CBS Television in New York City before retiring in 1991. John won 4 Emmy Awards, one for the first black and white slow motion picture and received another when it was made into a color motion picture. He won two for sports editing.
He was a former communicant of Our Lady of Peace RC Church in Fords and Holy Trinity RC Church in Helmetta. He was a life member of Union City VFW and life member of Clara Barton American Legion #324 in Edison. He was a founding member of the Fords Bearcats Pop Warner football, and was a life member of the NRA. He served in the Air Force during WWII.
He was predeceased by his wife, Catherine Denzel Mayer in 1995; son Andrew William in 1969; and sister, Ann Merz in January of 2010.
Surviving family members include 2 sons: John Peter and his wife Donna of Barnagat, and Paul Stephen and his wife Laura of Jamesburg; daughter, Kathryn Patricia Pfeifer of Ocean Township; former son-in-law Douglas Pfeifer; 7 grandchildren: Robert, Stephen, Nicole, John Paul, Jillian, Christopher, and Melissa; 1 great-grandson, Ethan Robert; brother Andrew of Fords; and sister, Barbara Pein of Bayville.
Funeral Services will be Tuesday at 10:00 AM from Flynn and Son Funeral Home, 23 Ford Avenue, Fords, followed by a 10:30 AM Funeral Liturgy at Our Lady of Peace RC Church. Burial will be at Holy Rosary Cemetery. Visitation will be on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM.
