Obituary

Johannes Kanis, 82, of Edison, passed away on Monday, June 7, 2010 at his home. Born in West New York, NJ, "Hans" was raised in Metuchen.

Following his graduation from Metuchen High School, he served in the Navy submarine service on the USS Besugo in Hawaii, Hong Kong, and the Pacific. After completing his tour of duty, he married, attended the University of New Brunswick in Canada, and eventually settled in Edison, where he has resided for the past 58 years.

A tool and die maker by trade and amateur extra class ham radio operator (K2GO), he was known for the diversity of his interests as well as his devotion to his family.

He is predeceased by his parents, Johannes and Helene Kanis and his brother, Herbert. Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Gloria Babcock Kanis; his children and their spouses: Loran and Thomas Tanel of Texas, Kim and Susan Kanis of Piscataway, and April and William McCarthy of Vermont; his six grandchildren: Christopher, Rebecca, Daniel, Jordan, Aliza, and Matthew; and a great-granddaughter, Bella.

A Funeral Gathering will be offered at 10 AM on Friday, June 11th at Flynn and Son/Koyen Funeral Home, 319 Amboy Avenue, Metuchen, with interment following at Hillside Cemetery in Metuchen. Calling hours at the funeral home will be from 3-7 PM on Thursday.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Hans' memory to Haven Hospice at JFK Medical Center, 65 James Street, Edison, NJ 08820.
