Brown
May 30, 1945 – April 10, 2026
James J. Brown, 80, of Scotch Plains, passed away peacefully at home on April 10, 2026. Born in Brooklyn, James spent most of his life in the West Brighton section of Staten Island before relocating to Scotch Plains in later years.
James proudly served his country as a Vietnam combat veteran of the United States Army. Following his military service, he dedicated 36 years of his career as a bus driver for the MTA in New York City, retiring in 2006. He was also a proud member of the Emerald Society and the Ancient Order of the Hibernians.
A devout Catholic, James was a faithful communicant of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Scotch Plains. He will be remembered for his strong faith, dedication to his family, hardworking spirit, and unwavering kindness and willingness to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
James was predeceased by his beloved wife, Anna Brown, on January 21, 2025.
He is survived by his loving children: Kathleen Gundacker, Mary Aviles, Ann McCarthy, James Brown, Patricia Shanberg, Elizabeth Galves, Theresa Zapken, Michael Brown, and John Brown; along with his 20 cherished grandchildren, his great-granddaughter, and his faithful dog, Toby.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Flynn and Son / Koyen Funeral Home, 319 Amboy Avenue, Metuchen.
Funeral services will begin on Thursday, April 16, 2026, at 9:15 AM at the funeral home, followed by a 10:00 AM Funeral Mass at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Scotch Plains. Interment will follow at St. Gertrude Cemetery in Colonia.
