Howard Kaufman, 89, of Metuchen, N.J., passed away on Saturday, September 28. He was born to Sol and Lillian Reder Kaufman on April 27, 1930, in Perth Amboy, N.J.
Howard is survived by Marian, his devoted wife of 61 years, and his children, Linda and James, Larry and Hilda, Robert and Peggy, and his grandchildren Jacob, Jonas, Sarah, Will and Katharine, and many loving cousins.
He was predeceased by his brothers Lester, Leo and David.
Howard spent his entire childhood in Perth Amboy where he graduated Perth Amboy High School and formed lifelong friendships. He was an early member of the Raritan Yacht Club, where he honed his sailing skills and later became Commodore. After graduating Syracuse University, Howard enlisted in the U.S. Army and entered the Korean War. Upon his return, he joined his father and brothers in the family business, OK Electric in Perth Amboy. In 1958, he married Marian, the love of his life.
He later went out on his own into the manufactured housing field, owning and operating three communities. He served as President of the New Jersey Manufactured Housing Association.
Howard was a passionate outdoorsman, spanning fishing, tennis, sailing, rowing, skiing, and, in later years, fly-tying and fly-fishing. He was an active member of the Lake Solitude Fishing Club, as well as the Raritan Yacht Club. Howard and Marian enjoyed traveling in the U.S. and abroad, the Metropolitan Opera and the Philharmonic in New York City, and especially spending time with family. Howard was a was longtime member of Temple Neve Shalom in Metuchen, where he had served as Vice-President of the congregation.
A lovely man with a great sense of humor, Howard fully embraced life and was truly a man for all seasons. Howard was a good friend, a great father, and an adoring and loving husband. He was loved by many and will be missed by all.
Services will be held on Wednesday, October 2, at 10:30 AM, at Flynn and Son Funeral Home, 23 Ford Avenue, Fords, N.J. Burial to follow at Cedar Park Cemetery, 735 Forest Avenue, Paramus, N.J. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Congregation Neve Shalom or the Jewish Community Center of Middlesex County.
