Obituary

Herbert Henry Hersh passed peacefully on June 8, 2025, at Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center in New Brunswick, New Jersey.  He was 92.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in New Brunswick, New Jersey, he built a rich and fulfilling life with his family in Edison before eventually settling in Monroe Township.   He was the cherished son of the late Joseph and Celia Hersh and brother of Muriel Levine Pizer, and Diana Lipschitz. A proud alumnus of Rutgers University, Herb distinguished himself as President of his Class of 1954 and as a dedicated board member of the Rutgers Alumni Association for nearly 50 years.  His commitment to the University was recognized with the prestigious Loyal Sons & Daughters Award. He honorably served as an officer in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. In 1957, he married the love of his life, the former Ellen Rinzler, and together they were blessed with two children, Nanci and Len.

An extraordinary man with a knack for business, Herb took over his father's millinery business and successfully expanded it to ten locations across New Jersey, primarily under the name Nobby Shoppes.  He also contributed to his community by serving on the boards of local banks and teaching business and marketing courses at Middlesex County College.

Herb had an incredible gift for connecting with people, always eager to meet new friends and uplift those around him with his positive energy and genuine care. To Herb, every person he encountered was a friend he had yet to meet.

Herb was preceded in death by his treasured wife, Ellen, in 2018.  He is survived by his daughter Nanci Hersh and her husband, Scott Dight; son Len Hersh and his wife, Tory; grandchildren Eliza Lorentzen, her husband, Oivind; Charlotte Weinberg her husband, Charlie; Griffin Dight, his wife Cassidy; and Nate Dight.  The family was recently blessed with a great-granddaughter, Elle Lorentzen, who carries forward his legacy of love, warmth, and boundless energy.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, from 10:30 am until the time of services at 11:30 am at the Flynn and Son / Mituska Funeral Home, 23 Ford Ave., Fords, NJ. Following the funeral home service, Herb will be laid to rest next to his wife Ellen in Beth Israel Cemetery, Woodbridge, NJ.

Shiva will take place from Wednesday, June, 11, 2025, 2-5 p.m. Please contact family for address.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Herbert and Ellen Hersh Scholarship Fund, Delaware Institute for the Arts in Education , or to the charity of your choice.
