Obituary

Henry J. Cackowski, 89, of Edison, passed away on April 2, 2017, at JFK Haven Hospice, in Edison, NJ.  Born in Perth Amboy to Joseph and Estella Cackowski in 1927, he resided in Edison for the past 50 years.  He attended St. Stephen's Parochial School in Perth Amboy and graduated from Perth Amboy High School with the Class of 1945.  He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He was employed as a Supervisor at Central Vehicle for Heavy Equipment in North Brunswick, retiring in 2007.  Henry devoted much of his time to civic duty and eventually became Mayor of Edison following Anthony Yelencsics.  He was active with the March of Dimes for 20 years, serving as Edison Township Chairman for most of that time.  He was a Charter Member of the Edison Elks Lodge No. 2483 and served as the Exalted Rule for the year 1973-74.  He previously served as Vice President and Trustee for the Central District of the New Jersey State Elks Association and as Deputy Grand Exalted Rule for the Central District of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the USA.  He was a member of the Edison Father & Son Post #435 American Legion and the Edison Council #4885 Knights of Columbus.  He was Past Commander of the VFW where he served eight years as Post Quartermaster.  He was the Past President of the Edison Kiwanis Club.  Henry served on the Edison Township Zoning Board of Adjustment for 11 years, holding the position of Vice Chairman for one year and Chairman for nine.  He served three terms as a member of the Edison Township Site Plan Review Committee and served on the Architectural Selection Board for the new Town Hall in Edison.  He served on the Edison Township Planning Board for 35 years and as its Chairman for the las five years.  Henry received many honors and awards for his distinguished service to his community.
Henry was predeceased by his sister, Florence Wantuch.  He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, MaryAnn (Burchock) Cackowski; his sons, Robert Cackowski of Lancaster, PA, and Russell Cackowski of Fords; his granddaughters: Amanda, Tracy and Tammy; his brother, Alfred Cackowski of Monroe; and his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Irene and Stephen Kermondy of Fords.  He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Thursday from 7-9 pm and Friday from 4-8 pm at the Flynn and Son/Koyen Funeral Home, 319 Amboy Avenue, Metuchen, NJ.  An Elks Ceremony is scheduled for Friday at 7 pm.  Funeral service will be on Saturday at 9:30 followed by a 10:15 Funeral Liturgy at St. Francis Cathedral in Metuchen.  Interment will follow in St. Michael's Cemetery, Fords.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Elks National Foundation for Education or to JFK Haven Hospice.
