Obituary

Harold Conover Schanck, 88, of Edison, passed away on April 27, 2015, at his home. Harold was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Perth Amboy serving as a Deacon, Trustee, and Elder. He participated in the choir. Harold was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during WWII. He was a member of the Masons Lafayette Lodge #27, Rahway.

In his early years, he was an active trap shooter, proud to have participated in the Olympic trials. He was an avid small aircraft pilot and enjoyed summers in Cape May Point, NJ.

Harold was a professional Engineer. In 1959, he founded Cormet Metallurgical Laboratories and CorFlo Tubular Products, serving the U.S. Navy nuclear program. In 1969, Harold founded Spectrum Laboratories, a metallurgical engineering and testing company. He remained the President/Operator of Spectrum until his death.

He studied Science at Middlebury College and Mechanical Engineering through the International Correspondence School. He obtained an Associate degree in Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology and his B.Sc degree in Metallurgy from Phoenix University.

Prior to founding Spectrum, Harold was employed as an Estimator at Alloy Fabricators, Perth Amboy; a Project Engineer at L.O. Koven, Jersey City; a General Manager at Stainless Products, Clifton, NJ; and Technical Director at Swepco Tubular Products in Clifton, NJ.

He was active in professional societies as an educator in welding and metallurgy. He was a certified Welding Inspector and educator. He presented technical publications and participated on the American Society for Testing Materials Subcommittee for stainless steel pipe and tube. He held patents for a diversified tool kit and quick connect pipe couplings.

Harold was predeceased by his wife, Elaine (Petersen); his daughter, Janet; and his sister, Marion. He is survived by his son, Garrett and his wife, Gahan, and four grandsons: Garrett, Jr., Alexander, Nicholas, and Jameson, all of Piscataway, NJ.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 1, at 10 am at the Flynn and son/Koyen Funeral Home, 319 Amboy Avenue, Metuchen, NJ. Interment will follow in Alpine Cemetery, Perth Amboy. Visitation will be on Thursday from 4 to 8 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Harold's name may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Perth Amboy.
