Gloria Ruby
Sunshine Rubin
Mar 29, 1925 — Jan 14, 2016
On Thursday January 14 th , our beloved mother, Gloria Ruby Sunshine Rubin, departed our lives to begin her final journey to join her husband, Lloyd, who had an 11 year head start. She passed away peacefully and in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. Gloria was born in 1925 into a world strife with conflict and hardships, yet she made her way along life's path with a quiet dignity that she carried with her until her final moments on earth. She devoted her life to serving her family and others in the nursing field and through her participation in the many organizations to which she selflessly was a part. She was so organized that she usually wound up in a leadership role as she was one who found the best way to guide was from the front. In that vein, the following account of her life was written by Gloria herself and given to her children to hold for this day so that they would have some guidance for this history.
Gloria Sunshine Rubin was born in Brooklyn, NY, in March of 1925. She attended Woodbridge township schools and graduated from Woodbridge High School in 1942. When the call when out, she joined the U.S. Cadet Nursing Corps in 1943 and graduated from Norwegian Hospital School in 1945.
With the end of WWII, she was introduced to her future husband, Lloyd, a returning war veteran and they married in 1947. Her professional career was decided when she went to work as a school nurse in Iselin Elementary schools and then to the newly constructed Avenel Junior High School where she stayed until her retirement after 38 years of service.
The organizations she loved so much include: B'nai Brith of Perth Amboy, Parkway Chapter of Deborah, Woodbridge Twp School Nurses Assn., NJ State School Nurses Assn., Woodbridge Twp Education Association, NJ Educators Assn., National Education Assn., and the Woodbridge Twp Retired Educators Assn., where she held offices in most.
She was the founder of the National Ladies Auxiliary of the 4 th Armored Division Assn and served as its founding and first National President.
She was a member of Temple Beth Mordeai in Perth Amboy and of the Temple Sisterhood.
In her retirement, she and her husband loved to travel, and as was her nature, she became involved in the Middlesex Roadrunners Chapter of the Good Sam Camping Organization and the Family Motor Coach Assn.
Finally in the last chapter of her life, she lived in Seabrook Village in Tinton Falls where she became involved with many committees there including the Jewish Residents Committee (president) and the Retired Nurses Assn. (founder and 1 st president)
With all that Gloria did in her life, which was very full, she also raised a family and lived to see her grandchildren on successful paths in life.
In this life Gloria was predeceased by her parents, Ben and Rose Sunshine; her sisters, Cynthia Shapiro and Lynn Maron and her beloved husband and best friend, Lloyd. She is survived by her children, David and his wife, Judy, of Mt Pleasant, SC, and Mitchell and his wife, Pat, of Edison. She was loved and will be remembered by her grandchildren, Sarah and Aaron, who were the rewards of her life that she enjoyed until her last days.
She will be missed by many. We love you Mom and will always hold you in our hearts. We know that you will always be keeping an eye on us all and we will do our very best to make you proud of us.
The family will receive mourners on Sunday, January 17, 2016, from 12 Noon to 1:00 PM at the Flynn and Son Funeral Home, 23 Ford Avenue, Fords, NJ 08863. Services will follow at 1:00 PM in the funeral home. Interment will be in Beth Israel Cemetery.
