Gino
Delfini
March 6, 1936 – January 16, 2021
Gino Delfini, 84, of Edison, passed away on Saturday, January 16, 2021.
Born in Isernia, Italy to Guiseppe and Carolina (nee Fuoco) Delfini, Gino was the middle of five children. Gino survived the bombing of his home town during World War II as a child. He went on to graduate high school in Italy, overcoming great hardships in his home country following the devastation of the war. He immigrated to the United States alone as a teenager in the early 1950's and began to make his life in America. Gino lived in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Philadelphia and Staten Island before settling in Edison and residing there for 35 years. He first worked as an automobile mechanic for a family that became mentors and close friends for life, then went on to advance his career in the construction industry. He was a dedicated member of Local 79 Laborer's International Union of North America, even after his retirement. He worked with enterprises such as HRH Starrett Construction and VJB Construction in New York City and went on to work on projects across the globe. Gino was passionate about the health and safety of his colleagues and employees on every job site he worked and was a mentor to countless young people throughout his life. A lover of life and the finer things, Gino loved taking road trips and exploring the United States, Canada and Europe with his beloved wife of 62 years, Maryann. They most especially enjoyed driving Highway 101 along the coast of California, taking in the beautiful scenery, good meals and great wine. Gino was a foodie and thoroughly enjoyed his fine red wines. He loved to cook for the men he worked with, and loved to watch them enjoy whatever he made. He was also a life-long follower of the sport of cycling, especially his Italian hero Fausto Coppi. His favorite hobby was ballroom dancing, especially to a tango, and he would dance with his wife Maryann as often as possible.
Gino is predeceased by his parents Giuseppe and Carolina Delfini, and his late siblings Maria, Alfredo, Lucio and Ida. Gino is survived by his wife, Maryann (nee: Freda); her brother, Fred, and his wife, Kathy; her sister, Rosemary, and her husband, Les; and her sister Margaret. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
