George R. Smith, 85, of Edison, passed away January 25, 2014, at Haven Hospice in JFK Medical Center. He was born February 14, 1928, in Perth Amboy. He graduated Perth Amboy High School, Class of 1946. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Peace Church; past Grand Knight of Our Lady of Peace Knights of Columbus and 4th degree member of St. Cecelia's Assembly. He served in the US Navy during the Korean War as an aerial photographer, 1952-1954. He was the First Vice President and Librarian of the Navy Lakehurst Historical Society. George was a Captain and Life Member of the Clara Barton First Aid Squad. He was the Chief Photographer and Photo Editor for the Courier News. He was a 28-year member of the NJ Press Photographers Association, where he was a Past President and served as an Electoral Board Committee Member and Chairperson. He was life member of the National Press Photography Association and an Instructor of Photography at the Edison Adult School.
George is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Marie (nee Holland) Smith, of Edison; daughter, Caryn Dahl MD and her husband Stephen of Bridgewater; son, Brian Smith and his fiancé Joyce O'Neil of Stockbridge MA; and 3 grandchildren: Erin, Gregory, and Kirsten.
Visitation will be Wednesday 2-4 and 7-9 pm at the Flynn and Son Funeral Home, 23 Ford Ave., Fords, NJ 08863. Funeral Services will begin Thursday 10 am at the funeral home, followed by a 10:30 am Funeral Liturgy at Our Lady of Peace Church in Fords. Entombment will be in Good Sheppard Mausoleum in Colonia.
