George Schimpf Sr. was born in Perth Amboy on November 18, 1925 to Paul and Mary (LeiIi) Schimpf. Known as "Utchie" to his family and friends, George was one of ten children growing up during depression times. He served as Aviation Mechanic aboard the aircraft carrier USS Ticonderoga during WWII, and was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained in combat. He was a member of VFW Posts 6090 and 8885, Disabled American Veterans, Big T Veterans Association, and Military Order of the Purple Heart.
A lifelong resident of the Fords section of Woodbridge Township, George was employed by Chevron Oil Company, Perth Amboy, as well as the United States Postal Service. He was skilled with his hands, and a meticulous worker who would always do-it-himself to get the job done right. No family gathering was complete until George played "Roll Out the Barrel" on his accordion. Known as "Poppy" to his grandchildren, George embraced them with a warm smile, memorable laugh and generous heart.
