Obituary

Frederick E. Carpene passed away peacefully and comfortably at his home on April 16, 2025, surrounded by his family who adored him. He was 90 years old.

Born and raised in Stafford Springs, Connecticut, Fred graduated from the Darrow School in New Lebanon, New York, in 1952 and after spending a year in Italy, he earned a BA in French from the University of Connecticut in 1957.

After graduating as a proud UConn Husky, Fred was inducted into the US Army in 1958. Upon his honorable discharge, he embarked on a successful career in international business which had him travel to a multitude of foreign countries throughout the Middle East and South America. He ultimately went on to own a small photo processing business from which he retired in 1995.

Fred's success in business was dwarfed by his two true passions: his family and golf. As the patriarch of the Carpene clan, there was nothing Fred enjoyed more than having a family dinner with his kids, their spouses, his grandchildren and his wife of 64 years, Mary. Those loud dinners were always filled with an abundance of great food, drink, and most of all, laughter.

His second love was golf – playing it, watching it, and talking about it. He was a member of the Metuchen Golf and Country Club for almost 50 years where he would often cap off a round of 18 holes with a few games of banter-filled gin rummy in the men's grille. "Carp" or "Freddie" as he was typically called by his club pals, truly enjoyed a life well lived.

Fred's legacy, including the family traditions that he so loved, will continue through his wife Mary; his son Gregg and his wife Missy, of Yardley PA; his daughter Dara and her husband Jason, of Metuchen NJ; and his three grandchildren, Ethan, Zoe and Serina, each of whom cherish the abundance of time they got to spend with their Nonno.

Friends may call on Monday, April 21, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the Flynn and Son/Koyen Funeral Home 319 Amboy Ave, Metuchen, NJ 08820.  A funeral service will be held in the funeral home at 7:30 pm. The burial will be at the Fairview Cemetery in Westfield, NJ and will be private.
