Obituary

Evelyn M. Codd, 89, of Edison, NJ, passed peacefully with her family at her side on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, at the home of her son, George.  Born on September 24, 1936, she lived most of her life on Staten Island, NY, and has resided in Edison, NJ, since 2004.  She was a graduate of Port Richmond High School, Class of 1954, and received her nursing degree from St. Vincent's Hospital School of Nursing in 1982. She re-entered the workforce to support her family after her husband became disabled with Multiple Sclerosis.  She worked for many years as a Nephrology nurse with the Richmond Kidney Center and at other places on Staten Island before her retirement at age 70.

Evelyn was a parishioner of Our Lady of Peace RC Church in Fords, NJ, where she was a member of the Columbiettes. She was also a long-time member of the Manresa Christian Life Community on Staten Island, NY, and a volunteer for Life Choices Resource Center in Metuchen, NJ.  She enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, embroidery, and gardening. Evelyn also loved to dance and going to the opera. The door was always open at the Codd home. She welcomed her children's friends and became a second mom to many.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband of over 40 years, Bernard Codd, who died in 1997 and her beloved daughter, baby Theresa Mary Codd, who died in 1960. She was also predeceased by her siblings: George, William, and baby Catherine Leanza, and Rita Samuelson, along with her parents, George and Catherine Leanza.

She leaves behind eight of her children: Evelyn Codd (Michael Basile), Joseph Codd (Patricia), Bernard Codd (Joanne), Elizabeth Moroney (Patrick), Monica Codd-Wizeman (Stephen Wizeman), Maria Codd-Perez (Charles Perez), Frances Slusarz (John), and George Codd (Jeannette Harjo-Codd); her 26 grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren. Also surviving are her siblings: Catherine Mitchell, Mary Triano, John Leanza, Richard Leanza, and Joan Foggin, along with her sisters- and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews, and her children's friends for whom she became a second mom.

Visitation will be on Sunday, March 1, 2026, from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm at the Flynn and Son/Mitruska Funeral Home, 23 Ford Avenue, Fords, NJ 08863. Funeral services will begin at 10:00 am on Monday, March 2, 2026, from the funeral home followed by a 10:30 am Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Peace RC Church. Interment will follow at St. Peter's Cemetery, Staten Island, NY.
