Eugene J. Tyrrell, M.D., 97, of Edison, passed away on February 11, 2022, in his home.

Born in Perth Amboy, NJ on February 24, 1924, Dr. Eugene J. Tyrrell was the son of John W. Tyrrell and Nora Daly Tyrrell. He was a graduate of St. Mary's High School in Perth Amboy, Class of 1940 and St. Peter's University Class of 1943. Dr. Tyrrell received his medical degree from NYU Grossman School of Medicine, and he received his degree in 1951.

He completed two years of residency at Newark City Hospital before returning to Perth Amboy where he had a private medical practice for more than 50 years. He joined the medical staff of the Raritan Bay Medical Center – Perth Amboy in 1953 and served as the President of the Medical Staff in the 1970's.

During World War II, he served as a Lieutenant for the United States Navy in the Pacific.

Dr. Tyrrell was a communicant of St. Francis Cathedral and a member of the AMA. He spent winters in Florida perfecting his golf game. Eugene enjoyed playing golf and was a member of the Metuchen Country Club. He was also an avid reader and a lover of dogs.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Bernadette Tyrrell in 1976, his second wife, Celeste Tyrrell in 2006; his brother, George Tyrrell; and his late son-in-law, Robert Mallon in 2016.

Dr. Eugene J. Tyrrell is survived by his children, Eugene J. Tyrrell, and his wife Margaret, of Ocean Township, NJ; Nancy Mallon, M.D. of Caldwell, NJ and John Tyrrell of New York City; his grandchildren, William Mallon, M.D., Maggie Mallon, her husband Paul Yudd, Patrick Mallon, and Dylan Tyrrell; and his nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at the Flynn and Son Funeral Home 424 East Ave., Perth Amboy, NJ 08861 on Thursday, February 17, 2022, 4-8 pm. Funeral services will begin Friday 9:15 am at the funeral home followed by a 10:15 am Funeral Liturgy at St. Francis Cathedral in Metuchen, NJ. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Perth Amboy.
