Eleanor
Mccarthy
May 15, 1928 – June 25, 2021
Eleanor McCarthy, 93, of Metuchen, passed away peacefully at home on June 25, 2021. She was born on May 15, 1928. Born in Newark, Eleanor graduated from Jonathan Dayton High School, Springfield, before marrying in 1953 and moving to her marital home in Cranford.
Eleanor started her working life as a Manager at Fanny Farmer Candies and went on to manage two further stores by her early 20's. She left to work for a publishing house where she rose to Assistant Buyer quite quickly, before having her first child and deciding to become a stay-at-home Mom.
What she admittedly lacked in cooking skills, she more than made up for in running a happy home and showering her children and their friends in love and kindness.
Tragically losing the love of her life at a mere 48 years old, she single-handedly kept the family together. She landed a position as a bookkeeper in the Physics Department of Rutgers University thanks to the kindness of a wonderful neighbor, Esther Gallina. She remained there for 16 years until she retired.
Although Mom had travelled throughout Europe, the US and Canada, NJ and, specifically, the NJ beaches could never be beaten in her eyes nor the "Jersey tomato"!
Mom stayed curious, was well read, modest, brave, kind, generous, spirited and non-judgmental. She was a loyal friend and confidante who had a wonderful work ethic and opened her house to all who needed it. Mom taught empathy and kindness above all else and for that we celebrate her now and always!
Eleanor was predeceased by her beloved husband of 24 years, Richard P. McCarthy, her son, Richard P McCarthy, a brother, Leonard Fronhofer, a sister-in- law/best friend, Minerva Fronhofer, and son-in-law, Daniel Brown.
She is survived by her 2 sons, Jack McCarthy and his partner, Donna Rohm, of Bangor, PA; Glenn McCarthy, of Metuchen, NJ; and her 3 daughters: Pat Brown, of Toms River, NJ; Colleen Klovert and her husband, Rick, of Metuchen, NJ; and Kathleen McCarthy and her fiancé, David Patterson, of the U.K.; grandchildren: Hannah McCarthy and her husband, Rich, of Flemington, NJ; Carol Kirchhoff and her husband, Tim Correll, of Nazareth, PA; Suzanne Galambos, of Milford, PA; Richard McCarthy, of NJ; Bill Kirchhoff and his wife, Jackie Kuhn, of Metuchen, NJ; Jack McCarthy and his wife, Ciara, of Eldridge, MD; Katie Wilson, of Union Beach, NJ; Daniel Brown, of FL; Kelly DeFranco and her husband, Frank, of Tinton Falls, NJ; Samantha Klovert, and her fiancé, Eric Kierneia, of Neptune, NJ; and Brian Klovert, of Hoboken, NJ; great-grandchildren: Alex, Kiera, Seth, Gage, Joe, Sean, Sara, Maya and Leonardo; and great-great-grandchildren, Marcie and Maicey Strauch.
Visitation will be Friday 4-8 pm at the Flynn and Son Funeral Home, 23 Ford Ave., Fords, NJ 08863. Funeral Services will begin at the funeral home Saturday 9:00 am followed by a 9:30 am Funeral Liturgy at Our Lady of Peace Church. Interment will be in St. Gertrude Cemetery.
