Obituary

Edward Levinson, 77, of Metuchen, passed away on June 24, 2020 at JFK Haven Hospice, Edison.  Ed was born in Philadelphia and his family moved to Kansas City, MO when he was 11. Edward graduated in 1964 from Washington University in Saint Louis with a BSEE. He joined the Army JROTC in high school, and was in the ROTC through his time at Washington University in Saint Louis.  He earned a PhD in Electrical Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania in June of 1971.  He held a commission as a 2 nd Lieutenant during graduate school which counted towards his reserve time. He received an honorable discharge in 1972 at the rank of 1 st Lieutenant.

In August of 1965 he went of a blind date, arranged by his first cousin, with Susan. They got engaged in October, married in June and moved to Randolph, NJ when Ed became a Member of Technical Staff at Bell Labs in Whippany.  Ed and Susan raised Melinda and Michael there and were active members of the Morristown Jewish Center. In 1984 Ed and the family moved to Metuchen, NJ and joined Congregation Neve Shalom and have been active members of ever since. Ed and Susan served on the Adult Education Committee and enjoyed helping to prepare food for Shabbat and other occasions.

Edward spent his career as a software engineer, working at Bell Labs, Bellcore and Accurate Information Systems. In the 1990s, he was a member of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), which developed standards and protocols in the early days of the internet. He was responsible for the development of the MIME/multipart content type protocol, which enables people to send emails with documents and pictures attached.

Ed was a Renaissance man who loved poetry, sailing, making wine, photography, traveling, Judaism and his family. Ed is survived by his wife of 54 years, Susan (Uram); his son Michael Levinson and daughter-in-law Helaine, granddaughter Harper; his daughter Rabbi Commander Melinda Zalma and son-in-law Adam; grandchildren Nathan and Sophia; his sister, Naomi Levinson-Lustgarten; and his brother Robert Levinson.

Graveside services were held 2 PM on Friday, June 26, 2020 at Beth Israel Cemetery, Woodbridge.

Shiva will be held outside at the family's residence at 47 Clive Street in Metuchen, and on Zoom
