Dorothy S. August passed away Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at the age of 93. Born and raised in Red Bank, NJ, Dorothy moved briefly to Perth Amboy when she married and then to Edison where she resided for the last 60 years.
After graduating High School, her professional career began at Fort Monmouth, transferring to Raritan Arsenal when she moved to Perth Amboy. Subsequently, Dorothy was employed by the Edison Board of Education where for 15 years she was the school secretary first at Oak Tree School and then the Benjamin Franklin School.
Enrolling in college at the age of 49, she graduated from Rutgers University with a degree in Psychology.
Following her retirement from the school system, Dorothy spent the next 10 years as a volunteer English as a Second Language teacher with the Literacy Volunteers Organization where she was recognized as Teacher of the Year. A number of her students were still in touch with her today. Dorothy had a love of the performing arts and was an avid theater and ballet attendee and was glued to her TV for all the major tennis tournaments.
Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, Kalman and is survived by her daughter, Cheryl, her sister, Miriam Friedman of Middletown, NJ, her brother, David Silberstein of Red Bank, loving nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be Monday, May 29, 2017, 1 pm at Congregation Beth Mordecai, 224 High Street, Perth Amboy, NJ. Interment will be immediately following at the Beth Mordecai Cemetery. Contributions may be made to Congregation Beth Mordecai. Shiva will be observed Monday 7 pm at the home. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Flynn and Son Funeral Home, Fords.
