Dorothy Mae Hollender Akey passed away peacefully after a long period of declining health on Friday, August 6, 2010 at Roosevelt Care Center.
Known as Holly, she was born in Perth Amboy in 1925. She was a life long resident of Metuchen and graduated from the University of Vermont with a degree in elementary education in 1947. She was married to Donald T. Akey in 1947 and returned to Metuchen after he finished his medical training. After raising her family, she worked in her husband's office for many years.
Holly was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Metuchen for sixty-eight years. She was a member of the Women's Auxiliary of both Roosevelt and JFK Hospitals in Edison. She also belonged to the Metuchen Twig group.
Holly was a wonderful mom and devoted wife whose contagious enjoyment of life endeared her to all, whether baking for her children's friends, hosting numerous dinner parties, traveling with friends, or playing tennis. Supporting her husband as he established a busy solo surgical practice, she raised her family with grace and humor. She enjoyed cooking and dining with family and friends. She was a warm and welcoming person. Prior to falling ill, she enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Europe.
Dorothy was predeceased by her husband of 51 years, her parents Lulu and Clayton Hollender, and her brother Clayton, Jr. Surviving are her six children, Alison Akey of Edison, Susan McKee of Montclair, Tom and wife Marian of Concord, New Hampshire; John and wife Martha of South Burlington, Vermont; Mark and wife Melissa of Williston, Vermont; Peter of Colchester, Vermont; fourteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren. A sister-in-law Rachel Hollender of Toms River.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at 10:00AM on Saturday, August 14 at the First Presbyterian Church, 270 Woodbridge Ave, Metuchen. Interment private.
