Constance (Connie) Mae Ritchie Hickey, 102, from Metuchen, NJ, passed away comfortably with her family at her side on April 26, 2011 at JF Kennedy Hospital's Haven Hospice Center.
She is preceded in death by her parents Agnes Scobie Steele Ritchie and Alwyne E. Ritchie, her sister Agnes Ritchie Talcott, and her daughter Carol Hickey Marhoffer and son-in-law, Wallace E. Marhoffer.
Connie was born and raised in Medford, Mass. After completing high school in Medford she graduated from the Bryant & Stratton Business College in Boston. She was extremely proficient in bookkeeping, shorthand and taking dictation. She was married to the late George Taylor Hickey in 1933. She moved to New Jersey in 1943 and relocated to Metuchen in 1950.
Connie joined the Reformed Church of Metuchen in 1950 and was active in church work for many years. Some of her notable civic work included: being active in the Metuchen P.T.A. and Metuchen YMCA; being a member of the Middlesex County Board of Elections; serving as President of the Golden Years Club in Metuchen; was a member of the Metuchen Seniors Club; served two terms as President of the Lincoln Avenue Building Seniors Club; served as Secretary of the Metuchen Republican Club whereby in 1971 she received a Recognition award for her dedicated service; Connie was also a member of the J.F.K. Auxiliary, and served for 22 years as a volunteer at JF Kennedy hospital.
She was an accomplished bridge player who even while in her late 90s was the scorekeeper. One of her peers who lived at the Metuchen Senior Citizens where she resided for 29 years exclaimed "She never made a mistake!"
With her sharp wit, sense of humor, tremendous outgoing personality, and overall positive mental attitude (her glass was always half full), she will be deeply missed.
Survivors include: her son, Alan M. Hickey of Iselin, NJ; four granddaughters: Linda C. Magvas of Piscataway NJ ; Terri H. Marhoffer of Woodbridge, NJ; Kathleen C. Marhoffer and Sondra H. Panahi, both of whom reside in Florida; and three great grandchildren: Brian R. Magvas, Eric W. Magvas and Saffron K. Panahi;
A memorial service is scheduled for 7:00 P.M. May 20, 2011 at the Reformed Church of Metuchen, 150 Lake Ave. Metuchen, N.J. (732) 548-2463. Following the service there will be a Coffee Social in Fellowship Hall.
