Christine M. Mellas, age 86, entered eternal rest on Sunday, September 27, 2026 in Matawan, NJ.

Christine was born on August 23, 1940 in Perth Amboy, NJ to the late Ralph and Rose (Zega) DeMaio. She grew up and spent her childhood in Perth Amboy, where she also graduated from St. Mary’s high school in 1959. After graduating high school, Christine went on to study and obtain a degree from the Katherine Gibbs School of Secretarial Training in NY. She worked as a secretary for the Edison Township Schools, specifically at Woodrow Wilson Middle School.

Christine’s greatest joy in life was her family. She treasured her large and ever-growing family and cherished every moment spent surrounded by the people she loved most. She had a beautiful zest for life, a contagious spirit, and a wonderful ability to make those around her laugh and feel at home. Christine loved to have a good time, share a delicious meal, go for a run, and, most of all, create memories with the people she held so dear. Her warmth, laughter, and love for life will be deeply missed and forever carried on in the hearts of her family and friends.

Christine was the love of James’s life, and he cherished her beyond measure. Even though she has left this physical world, her presence and comfort will always remain.

Christine is predeceased by her parents, Ralph and Rose (Zega) DeMaio; her brothers, Jerry DeMaio, Patsey DeMaio, and Joe DeMaio; her sister, Norma Barrett; and her dearest friend, Carol Freeman.

Surviving Christine is her beloved husband, James Mellas; her three cherished children, daughter Christine Seeman and favorite son in law Joseph Seeman of Rumson, NJ, James Mellas of Matawan, NJ, and Gary Mellas with his wife Beth of Roanoke, VA; her fifteen grandchildren, Kristy Seeman, Brittani Seeman, Nikki Seeman, Courtney Seeman, Joseph Seeman, Zachary Mellas, Anthony Mellas, Alena Mellas, Jennifer Mellas, Sarah Mellas, Rebecca Mellas, Elisha Mellas, Daniel Mellas, Ethan Mellas, and Elizabeth Mellas; and her 14 great grandchildren; along with many other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Visitation will take place on Thursday, October 1, 2026 between the hours of 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Flynn and Son / Mitruska Funeral Home, 23 Ford Avenue, Fords, NJ 08863. Funeral services will begin the next morning, Friday, at the funeral home at 10:00 AM, followed by a 10:30 AM funeral mass at Our Lady of Peace RC Church, Fords, NJ. Cremation will be private. Christine’s ashes will be laid to rest in St. James Cemetery, Woodbridge, NJ.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Christine’s memory may be made out to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
