Cheak Hoon Qua, 90, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family at home on Sunday, February 20, 2022.
Originally from Hainan Island, China, he relocated to Singapore at the age of 6 under the care of the Quek family. At the age of 16, he joined the British Navy HMS and retired 26 years later to immigrate to the United States in 1977. For 15 years, Mr. Qua was an exceptional chef, working at the Window of the World restaurant and Trusthouse Forte Food Services before retiring in 1992.
Mr. Qua was an outstanding sportsman in his youth. His specialties were swimming, track and field, and soccer. Most notably, he was the captain of the British Navy Chinese volleyball team, the most prominent in Singapore in the 1950s. His interest in music led him to win numerous karaoke competitions and his hidden talent in Chinese calligraphy painting surprised many.
Mr. Qua was preceded in death by his wife Ai Eng in 2018. He is survived by his three children: Johnny Qua, Tommy Qua, Lee Souksay and 9 grandchildren: Byron Qua, Adrian Qua, Michelle Qua, Aaron Qua, Nicholas Souksay, Jacqueline Souksay, Janelle Qua, Arielle Qua and
Karina Souksay.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 3, 2022, from 3:00pm to 7:00pm at Flynn and Son Funeral Home, 23 Ford Ave, Fords, NJ. where Funeral services will begin on Friday, March 4, 2022 at 9:00am.
Interment will follow at Rosehill Cemetery, Linden, NJ.
