Obituary

Born in Montego Bay, Jamaica, Barbara Marie Sylvester was known for her calm demeanor, indelible spirit of giving, and love for her family.
Barbara was defined by all who knew her, as a loving, committed mother. She shared a uniquely special bond with her daughter, Nicole Barlow, whom she raised in New Jersey. She was a go-getter, with a zest for life, always aspiring to provide the best life for Nicole and her tight knit circle of family and friends. Her hard-work and countless sacrifices are witness to the pride she held for her daughter's accomplishments, together, they were a mighty duo. "I will carry her fearless spirit, kind heart, strength, and determination" and "I will remember her infectious laughter and unconditional love all the days of my life", Nicole said when reflecting on Barbara's legacy.
Barbara was an ambitious woman whom frequently exceeded her goals as Associate Vice-President of Financial Aid at Berkeley College. As a testament to her dedication to people and selfless nature she held over 25 years of experience in higher education. Throughout her career she became a powerhouse advocate for the thousands of students she served on the journey towards their goals. She was a charismatic leader who held a high standard of performance and integrity for herself and others. When commenting about her purpose she wrote, "I enjoy working with students and parents, knowing I'm helping someone complete their dreams."
She was fearless and methodical in her approach to life, always planning ahead while taking the time seize the moment. She was an encouraging force in the life of many as she held a torch for helping people from all walks of life. Barbara shared her whit and heart-warming smile with her late brother, Sean Hillocks, whose son, Ashaun Hillocks, she cherished like her own.
Barbara enjoyed traveling, reading inspirational literature, watching her beloved Washington Redskins, and taking unexpected adventures with her daughter and mother, Jean Williams.
She was survived by her mother, Jean Williams, her father, Leebert Sylvester, daughter, Nicole Barlow, nephew, Ashaun Hillocks, and a host of family and friends whom she loved dearly. May her light shine forever.
"You have this one life. How do you want to spend it? Apologizing? Regretting? Questioning? Hating yourself? Running after people who don't see you? Be brave. Believe in yourself. Do what feels good. Take Risks. You have this one life. Make yourself proud."
