Obituary

Barbara Jane (Smith) DiPietro, of Edison, NJ, passed away on March 30, 2020 at JFK Hospital after a short illness. She was 86.  Born in 1933 in Philadelphia and raised in Drexel Hill, PA, Barbara was Valedictorian of her graduating class at Upper Darby High School and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania.

After college, Barbara came to NJ to work as a chemist and moved in with two roommates, Kathy and Marilyn, and the three became lifelong friends.  Barbara loved the Jersey shore after spending many summers there as a child, and it was at the beach she met her husband of over 50 years, John DiPietro (whom everyone called "Jake").  After they both retired, the two would spend weeks with friends and family at Long Beach Island.  The couple lived in Edison where they raised three children. When her children entered elementary school, Barbara started a teaching career and taught Science for 25 years at Colonia Middle School in Woodbridge, NJ.  While teaching, Barbara earned a Masters in Environmental Science from Newark College of Engineering (now NJIT).

Barbara was a long time parishioner of St Luke's Episcopal Church in Metuchen, NJ, where she served on the Alter Guild for several years. She was an avid reader and frequent contributor to the book club at St. Luke's.  Barbara loved to play Bridge and was a member of the neighbor bridge club back in the day.  She was also an active member and past president of the Clara Barton Seniors Club.

She was predeceased by her husband John, who passed in 2014.  She is survived by her brother, Bob and his wife, Anja, of Springhouse, PA; her brother-in-law, Moe and his wife, Ann, of Monroe Township, NJ; and her beloved children: her son, Joseph of Falls Church, VA; her daughter, Betty, of Woodbridge, NJ; her son John and his wife Barbara, of Baltimore, MD as well as many cherished nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

A celebration of Barbara's life will be held at a later date.
