Ann Burke Denes of Metuchen, passed away on September 6, 2016, at her home. Ann was born in Perth Amboy, NJ, to John and Agnes Dolan and was a lifelong resident until she moved to Metuchen in 2002. She graduated from St. Mary's High School and was a Legal Secretary before marrying and raising children. She returned to the workforce in 1959 to work for Mayor James J. Flynn, and then as a Secretary in the Perth Amboy High School Guidance Dept. where she enjoyed assisting the counselors and teenagers that they advise. She was then recruited by the Superintendent of Schools as his Personal Secretary where she worked until her retirement in 1980. Ann loved working with teachers and educators over the years, but most enjoyed guiding the new and often young staff in their budding careers. She was a born mentor.
In retirement she traveled widely, continued her avocation of ballroom dancing, and was a steady volunteer at Raritan Bay Medical Center. She and 5 other school secretaries continued their monthly luncheons well into their later years. Ann had also started the TMM (Ten Merry Maids) social group with 9 other High School girls, which lasted over 41 years.
She was predeceased by her daughter, Patricia Ann, in 1942 and her son, Donald John, in 2008.
Ann is survived by her daughter, JoAnne Bixler, and her husband, Howard, of Bridgewater; her daughter, Mary Kay Sessa, and her husband, Jerome, of Metuchen; and her beloved granddaughter, Maureen Claire Sessa, of Metuchen. She is also survived by 2 step-grandsons, Howard Bixler of Colorado and Russell Bixler and his wife, Serene, of New York City; and by many loving nieces and nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and a step-great grandson.
Visitation will be held at Flynn and Son Funeral Home , 23 Ford Ave., Fords, NJ 08863 on Friday September 9th from 2-4 and 7-9pm. A Chapel service will be held in St. James Mausoleum on Florida Grove Road in Hopelawn on Saturday, September 10th at 11 am.
