Obituary

Ann Marie Deak, 72, of Edison passed away on Wednesday, July 28, 2021.

Born in Perth Amboy to Rae and Mike Deak, she was raised in Hopelawn and attended local schools where she developed an interest in teaching. Upon graduation from Montclair College, she moved to Edison and began her teaching career in the Woodbridge Township School District. As a teacher of French and Spanish languages, she enjoyed her student interactions and delighted in creating a fun learning environment for them. One of her key lesson plans involved a "Foreign Festival" where her students were encouraged to dress in their ethnic garb, share their culture's stories, and bring in dishes for all to share. She acquired a large collection of great recipes over the years.

One of Ann Marie's favorite pastimes was going to juried craft shows with her sister Michele and good friend Carolyn, where she roamed the aisles in search of hand-crafted treasures. A talented artist herself, she created stunning stained glass-like paintings and a variety of ceramic figurines. She was also known for her beautifully unique, calligraphy-styled handwriting.

She loved the beach and traveled twice to the ultimate beach of Hawaii. She and her sister visited black sand beaches, quaint little shops filled with pearls and coral, and several little known ancient Hawaiian cultural sites. She also became a big fan of Kona coffee while there.

Another big part of her life was her love of dogs, and she had numerous "furry children" over the years from her huskies, Krishna and Bandit, to her final love, a rescued collie she named Lucky.

Ann Marie leaves behind her sister, Michele Kadash of Asbury, her brother-in-law Joe, and a niece and nephew, Allyson and Steven. She will also be greatly missed by her friend and caregiver, Lovely, as well as by many other dear friends. In keeping with Ann Marie's wishes, there will be no viewing. Those who would like to honor her memory are encouraged to donate time or funding to their local animal shelter or favorite pet charity. Flynn and Sons Funeral Home in Fords is handling her cremation. A private remembrance will be held by her family.
