Amy
Tunison
September 10, 1954 – December 14, 2025
MONMOUTH JUNCTION, NJ – Amy Tunison died at home on December 14, 2025, surrounded by her family after a long illness. She was 71 years old.
Born Amy Lynn Cooper at Beth Israel Hospital in Newark on September 10, 1954, she was the daughter of Elynor and Jack Cooper.
Amy lived briefly in Newark and grew up in West Orange and East Brunswick, where she graduated from East Brunswick High School in 1972.
She attended Harcum College and cosmetology school before joining the family's restaurant business, Jack Cooper's Celebrity Deli in Edison, in the late 1970s. Later she would become a property manager for several active adult communities in New Jersey.
In 1987 she met and married the love of her life, Jack Tunison. For many years they lived in Highland Park, where Jack had grown up, before moving to Monmouth Junction in 1999.
Throughout her life, Amy's sense of humor, lively energy and deeply felt emotions attracted many who would become lifelong friends, particularly among them Cheryl Miller, Debbie McCann, and Mindy Natoli. Most notably, Amy's best friend, Marci Kolitsch. Their friendship spanned almost 70 years, having met on their childhood street in West Orange, and they never missed a day of (multiple!) phone calls even when living states apart.
Amy was an incredibly devoted mother and a loving and doting Nana. Without doubt, the highlights of her life were the birth of her daughter, Ellie Faye, and that of her granddaughter, Madeline Ray. Amy always referred to both events as miracles – and they were. Being a mother and grandmother were Amy's greatest joys in life and truly who she was meant to be.
Amy is survived by her husband Jack, daughter Ellie and son-in-law Daniel Habib, sister Cheryl and her husband Howard Schickler, brother Warren Cooper and his wife Bonnie Pariser, sister-in-law Kathy and her husband George Aston, sisters-in-law Tammy Elliot and Faye Fella, nieces and nephews: Ria, Max, Ross, Melanie, Zachary, Dominique, Ryan, Sean, Connor, Rebecca, Jamie, Jesse, Emily, great-nephew, Benjamin and most loved by Amy, her granddaughter Maddie.
Amy was predeceased by her brother, Jeff Cooper, and her parents, Jack and Elynor Cooper.
A graveside funeral service will be held on December 16, 2025 at 10am at Beth Israel Cemetery in Woodbridge, New Jersey. Following the burial, friends and family are invited to gather at the home of Cheryl and Howard Schickler - 23 Vista Way Springfield, NJ. (**To avoid getting lost when using navigation, put in "Vista Way" without a house number and drive down to the last house in the cul-de-sac.) Shiva minyan will be held at 7pm.
In lieu of flowers, Amy specifically requested donations be made to STAAR Low-Grade Serous Ovarian Cancer Foundation in support of research that could save her daughter Ellie's life.
Graveside funeral services have been entrusted to the care of the Flynn and Son/ Koyen Funeral Home, 319 Amboy Ave Metuchen NJ 08840.
