Obituary

Jose Americo Diaz, age 89, passed peacefully with his family at his side, in Paramus, New Jersey on the 5th of September 2020.

Americo was born on the 10th of July 1931 in Sabana del Puerto, Bonao, Dominican Republic.

He was predeceased by his mother, Aurora Angelica Diaz Lazala, and stepfather, Eusebio Cepeda.

He was raised in La Vega, Dominican Republic, and immigrated to the United States in 1968.

He resided in Jersey City for 22 years, where he successfully owned a grocery store. His business acumen led him to move to Perth Amboy, NJ in 1990.  He became a pioneer by opening the first Dominican restaurant in Perth Amboy, Santo Domingo Invita, on Patterson Street. Soon after, he opened a second Dominican restaurant El Malecon on Market Street.

Americo married Lucia Antonia Batista Batista from Tavera, La Vega, Dominican Republic in 1963, and raised eight children. He was committed to providing for his family and always looking out for his children's well-being. His faith in God was apparent in his engagement with the Catholic community of Jersey City and Perth Amboy, where he was a Eucharistic Minister. Americo loved singing decimas and verses from his younger years and transmitted an appreciation for old-world Dominican traditions. In his younger years, he played the accordion at family gatherings and loved merengue tipico.  Two of the many songs that Americo loved to sing that will live in his children's hearts will be Compadre Pedro Juan from Joseito Mateo and Yo Vendo Unos Ojos Negros from Lucho Gatica.

Americo also was a huge fan of baseball, and his favorite team was the NY Yankees.

He leaves behind his beloved wife of 57 years, Lucia Diaz, and their eight children; Jose Antonio Diaz and his wife, Daliliah Mercado, and their children Jocelyn, Ricardo, and David; Daisy Diaz and her husband Renee Abreu, and their children Nathalie, Christopher, and Flavia; Jose Rufino Diaz and his wife Ada Lilong, and their children Crystal and Adonis; Jacqueline Diaz and her husband Antonio Bueno, and their children, Julissa, Tommy, and Alejandro; Dorqui Diaz and her children Allen and Kevin Arias; Terry Diaz and her children Karin and Evan Ojeda; Lucy Diaz and her husband Alfredo Mejia, and Brianny, Jennifer, and Alfred; Jannette Diaz and her husband Ralph Perez and their children Enzo and Valentina. Also raised with his children is Renata Gutierrez, his niece, that he always considered her to be another daughter.  Americo also had 16 great-grandchildren, Bryan, Myangel, Shainya, Samir, Crisabel, Crismary, Aurora, Alyiah, Nevaeh, Jeremiah, Zieon, Zaylie, Zeth, Zachary, Arianna, and Elianna.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 10, 2020, from 4 pm-8 pm at the Flynn and Son Funeral Home, 424 East Ave. Perth Amboy, NJ 08861.

Funeral services will be held on Friday September 11, 2020 beginning at 9:30 am from the Funeral Home, followed by a 10 am Funeral Liturgy at Our Lady of Fatima RC Church in Perth Amboy.

Entombment will follow in the Chapel of Everlasting Peace Mausoleum at Alpine Cemetery, Perth Amboy, NJ.

Americo nació el 10 de julio de 1931 en Sabana del Puerto, Bonao, República Dominicana. Fue precedido por su madre, Aurora Angélica Díaz Lazala, y su padrastro, Eusebio Cepeda. Se crió en La Vega, República Dominicana, y emigró a los Estados Unidos en 1968. Residió en Jersey City durante 22 años, donde poseía con éxito una tienda de comestibles. Su perspicacia empresarial lo llevó a mudarse a Perth Amboy, NJ en 1990. Se convirtió en un pionero al abrir el primer restaurante dominicano en Perth Amboy, Santo Domingo Invita, en la calle Patterson. También se crió con sus hijos Renata Gutiérrez, su sobrina, que siempre la consideró como otra hija. Americo también tuvo 16 bisnietos, Bryan, Myangel, Shainya, Samir, Crisabel, Crismary, Aurora, Alyiah, Nevaeh, Jeremías, Zieon, Zaylie, Zeth, Zachary, Arianna y Elianna.
